Teach Data Science? Free resources for educators

NPA/PDA resource development

This Data Lab funded project involved the Data Skills Gateway and Bayes Centre at the University of Edinburgh. The team worked with Effini to deliver a set of training materials around the learning outcomes of two national qualifications, the National Progression Award (NPA) in Data Science and the Professional Development Award (PDA) in Data Science. They are designed to support online, in person, and self-directed learning that is short-term, flexible and modularised.

The training materials focus on developing key data skills required for data literacy, working with data, data visualisation, data analysis, data manipulation, and statistics. The content introduces learners to, or equip learners with, theoretical and practical skills for the application/understanding of data skills and will include interactive and practical activities.

25 one hour long lessons were delivered comprising tutor notes, presentation materials for delivery of the content, Python notebooks or Excel spreadsheet for interactive activities and tasks, example answers and explanations, and supporting datasets where required.

See the lessons at learn-data.science and additional teaching resources available at Teachdata.science.

These resources can also be used in other subject areas and have been repurposed by The Data Lab to create two online course Data Management Fundamentals and Introduction to Data Manipulation with Excel.
